specs, rate and where it runs

What it is good at

  • Sharper detail and more natural light
  • Keeps the subject of a reference photo
  • Follows edits reliably over several rounds

What it costs here

19 credits per image.

Where it falls short

  • Small, dense text can still break

What changed since GPT Image 2

OpenAI points to four gains over GPT Image 2. Details are sharper, and light and texture look more natural. People and products from reference photos survive an edit better. Edit instructions also hold over several rounds instead of drifting. OpenAI adds that images arrive up to 50% faster.

There are two API versions. Flare is the fast default for most apps. Sunburst is meant for premium work that needs tight control across edits. Ugesi uses Sunburst, because most tools here change a photo you upload.

Jobs where it earns the higher rate

Pick it when the picture already exists and must stay recognizable. A bottle moves to a new background without its label changing. A room gets new furniture while the walls stay put. A portrait gets new light without a new face.

Good places to start: AI Product Photography with On marble or Dark studio. AI Image Editor with Swap the object or Remove logo. AI Relight with Window light, and Virtual Staging AI with Scandinavian.

Prompts that keep the subject

State what must not change before you say what should. Try: "Keep the bottle, its label and its shape exactly as in the photo. Replace the background with wet black slate and soft side light."

In a second round, change one thing at a time. Ask for warmer light first, then for a new angle. Asking for both at once makes it harder to see which change broke the image.

Where it still slips

Hands-on tests by DataCamp found that small, dense text is still weak. A long menu or fine print on a box can come back garbled. Keep the words short and large, or add them later in a design tool.

What a batch costs

Each image costs 19 credits, about $0.20 at the best pack. Ten tries come to 190 credits. GPT Image 2 costs 14 credits per image, so it suits rough layout drafts. Counting from the cheapest, GPT Image 2.5 ranks 38th of 41 image models.
